When a person builds their own computer, they can choose the exact parts that it’s equipped with. This customization helps create the perfect machine, which can easily be upgraded at any time. Here are some tips that a beginner or seasoned pro can use when building a new computer.
Test the motherboard
Before putting the motherboard into a case, it’s a good idea to install the RAM, CPU, CPU cooler, and video card. The motherboard can be placed on top of a box and hooked up to a power supply and monitor. If it’s fired up and shows the bios screen on the monitor, it should be safe to install it in the case. By going this route for installation, it avoids having to remove a DOA board.
Just the right amount of thermal paste
When a new computer is being built, thermal paste needs to be placed on the CPU before the cooling unit is installed. One of the best ways to do this is by placing a small dab directly in the middle of the CPU. It should be about the size of a pea. Once it’s been placed on the CPU, a heatsink can be put on top and screwed down.
Having a good plan
Like any successful project, having a good plan is crucial when a computer is being built. All of the parts should be compatible with each other so that they actually work. It also helps to visualize where each component is going to be placed. Hard drives should probably be installed first so that the power supply doesn’t hinder access to them.
Creating good airflow
Having a dusty, hot computer won’t be good. Some thought needs to go into how fans are going to be placed. This placement provides airflow in one direction so that it comes in the front and exits out the back. The airflow will probably be better if more intake fans are used. This setup creates a positive amount of air pressure inside the case, which should help air flow out of any small open spaces on the case.
Download new drivers
Typically, the components that go into a computer comes with a DVD or CD that contains drivers and other types of software. These are probably outdated. It’s better to visit the website of each manufacturer and download the drivers from those sites. This plan ensures that the latest drivers are being used. However, in the case of Wi-Fi or ethernet drivers, the drivers that are supplied by the manufacturer will have to be used. Without these drivers, the computer won’t have any way to connect to the internet.
